Careful Management Ensures US Border Control
Published on October 2, 2006 By mary stewart In Current Events
Today's political and social climate combined with the terror of 9/11 has made Americans more aware of protecting our borders. The Foundation for American Cultural Exchanges (FACE) has developed education programs that address those concerns by carefully monitoring the students while they are in the United States.

Three Levels of Screening

Students and families are pre-screened. Interested students are required to complete a FACE application which goes into a student packet along with proof of financial standing, grades and etc. Packets are reviewed by our Program Admission Office and accompany the request for an appointment with the US Embassy, Student Visa Section so the interviewer has complete and verified information about each student.

FACE evaluates the families’ ability to support the student financially. The family must demonstrate their deep root in their homeland (ownership of real estate, businesses and other ties); the ideal student is expected to return home to assume responsibility for the family business or to move into a governmental position.

The US Embassy or Consulate has fthe inal say. Although FACE takes special care to verify the information on the application and evaluate each student, the final decision rests with the US Visa Section.

With its three-level prescreening process, FACE helps to minimize the risks to the two nations involved, the families and the students themselves. FACE’s three-level screening includes:

Level #3: FACE prescreens students to determine their English language proficiency (ESL, TOEFL, etc.), family background, and demonstrated social-economic level sufficient to pay for the program. FACE matches the students with academic programs offered at participating universities in the United States.

Level #2: Representatives of those fully accredited institutions of higher education study the applications to determine whether or not the applicants meet their standards for admission. FACE verifies prescreened information and prepares a packet of information for the US Embassy’s review in the visa application process,

Level #1: Students are interviewed by the student-visa section of the US Embassy or Consulate in their homeland, and FACE assists in facilitating that process.

How Are FACE Students Supervised?

FACE students succeed with supervision. fACE recognizes and appreciates the importance of maintaining close relationships with both US and foreign officials. It is to that end that FACE develops educational programs that address the difficulties confronting foreign undergraduate students seeking to study in the United States.

FACE monitors all students the entire time that they are in the program. It does this in three ways:

* Upon arrival in the US, FACE representatives accompany students to the campus on which they have chosen to study.
* FACE monitors and verifies attendance, and arranges off-campus holiday/vacation activities.
* FACE maintains contact with the US Embassy and/or Consulates in the student's homeland, reporting any violation of the rules and regulations regarding the students’ non-immigration status, and assists the US-university in complying with all reporting requirements imposed by the US immigration law.
